What is SELT?

SELT (Secure English Language Test) is an approved English proficiency test required by the UK Home Office for various visa, immigration, and citizenship applications. These tests assess your ability to listen, speak, read, and write in English—depending on the visa category.

Who Needs a SELT?

You need a SELT if you are applying for:

  • UK Visa & Immigration (UKVI)

  • Student Visa (UKVI)

  • Skilled Worker Visa

  • Health & Care Worker Visa

  • Spouse/Partner Visa

  • Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

  • British Citizenship

Types of SELT Providers

The UK Home Office approves only specific test providers, such as:

  • PTE Academic UKVI

  • IELTS for UKVI

  • LanguageCert SELT

  • Trinity College London (for some visa types)

Why SELT Is Important
  • Mandatory for most UK visa applications

  • Provides secure, verified testing conditions

  • Ensures that applicants have the required English level (A1–C1 based on CEFR)

  • Test results are valid only for UK immigration purposes
